Corcovado National Park: A Testament to Costa Rica’s Biodiversity
This national park stands as a testament to the natural beauty and biodiversity of Costa Rica. This remarkable site is home to an array of rare and unique plant and animal species, many of which are protected within its boundaries. The park hosts the world’s largest populations of the Turquoise Cotinga (Cotinga ridgwayi), the Yellow-billed Cotinga (Carpodectes antoniae), and the Mangrove Hummingbird (Chrysuronia boucardi).
Additionally, it shelters the Black-faced Ant-Tanager (Habia atrimaxillaris), the smallest orchid in Costa Rica (Platystele tica), and the tallest tree species in all of Central America (Huberodendron allenii).
According to the University of Costa Rica (UCR), one hectare of forest on the Osa Peninsula contains more tree species than a similar area in the Brazilian Amazon. This includes giants like the emblematic black garlic (Anthodiscus chocoensis), the camíbar (Copaifera camibar), and the newly discovered black guapinoles (Hymenaea osanigraseminae and Prioria peninsulae).
The park protects the largest continuous and highest-quality stretch of Pacific Rainforest, an endangered ecosystem spanning southern Costa Rica and western Panama. UCR biologists highlight the sensitive and vulnerable nature of this ecosystem, noting that the Osa Peninsula is home to more than 3% of the planet’s biodiversity.
Between 1990 and 2005, extensive scientific efforts led to the description of 57 new plant species on the Peninsula, 52 of which are endemic.
Corcovado National Park and the Osa Peninsula have garnered numerous international accolades. BirdLife International designated Corcovado as an “Important Bird Area,” and the National Geographic Society recognized it as the most biologically intense place on Earth.
These recognitions underscore the extraordinary significance of the park and the conservation responsibility it represents for all Costa Ricans. UCR specialists stress the urgent need for further protection to safeguard the park’s biodiversity.
Experience the Best of Corcovado National Park with Our Day Tour
Our adventure kicks off early in the morning, starting with a pickup from your hotel in Manuel Antonio. We then head to the Sierpe Mangroves area for a hearty breakfast before embarking on a two-hour boat ride through Central America’s most extensive mangrove system and out into the Pacific Ocean. During this journey, you’ll have the opportunity to see schools of bottlenosed dolphins, sea turtles, and even humpback whales (July to October), making for a thrilling start to the day.
Upon arriving at Corcovado National Park, we embark on a leisurely two-hour hike, providing ample opportunities to spot the park’s diverse wildlife, including four species of monkeys and two species of sloths. After a break at the rangers’ station for a hearty lunch, we continue with a shorter, more rugged 1.5-hour hike that takes us to a beautiful waterfall where you can cool off and enjoy the serene surroundings.
The day concludes with a boat ride back to Sierpe and then to Manuel Antonio after sunset. Due to government policies limiting the number of daily visitors to Corcovado National Park, we recommend making reservations as early as possible to secure your spot.
