The loot was loaded onto the Mary Dear, a ship commanded by Captain William Thompson. However, instead of accomplishing their mission, Thompson and his crew murdered the Spanish guards, diverted the ship to Cocos Island and buried the treasure somewhere in its dense rainforest. Although Thompson was later captured, he managed to escape on the island, taking with him the secret of the treasure’s hiding place. Since then, the story of the Treasure of Lima has inspired countless adventurers to search for this lost wealth, although to this day, no one has managed to find it.
